ROSE
QUARTZ
SiO2
(Silicon Dioxide)

Rose quartz is just one of the many varieties found in the quartz family. Others you may recognize are amethyst, citrine, rock (clear) and smoky quartz to name a few. Quartz belongs to the Silica group of minerals.

Rose quartz is named after its color, which can fade in time with heat and direct sunlight. It is very hard (7 on the Mohs hardness scale) and brittle, with no cleavage and a conchoidal fracture. It is usually opaque to translucent with a glassy, vitreous luster. It is rarely transparent.

The pale pink to deep red rose color, occasionally with a purplish tinge, is caused by traces of manganese or titanium. Rose quartz almost always occurs in a massive or microcrystalline form in many pegmatites (a very coarse igneous rock, generally granitic in composition; they represent the last liquid portion of the crystallizing magma).

Well-formed rose quartz crystals are very rare. Found mainly in California and Maine (USA), in Minas Gerais, Brazil and Japan. Taquaral and Sapucaia in Minas Gerais, Brazil have produced some beautiful pink crystal specimens. The failure to find large well-formed crystals of rose quartz is a geological mystery.

Rose quartz often shows asterism (6-rayed stars) when cut in a sphere or cabochon, creating strikingly beautiful effects as a semi-precious gemstone in jewelry. It is also used for ornamental stones and carvings.

So, how is this mineral used for healing and spiritual growth?

Rose quartz has long been associated with the heart and beauty.

The heart, genitals, kidneys, liver, lungs and parasympathetic ganglia are strengthened and enhanced by this mineral. Tissue regeneration in the kidneys and red blood corpuscle manufacturing is stimulated. Fertility (especially in the male) increases. It eases the effects of diseases like leukemia, circulatory difficulties (particularly constriction of the blood vessels), and most sexual disorders. Rose quartz also offers protection against background radiation and exposure to other forms of radiation (especially radium). The assimilation of protein, iron, oxygen and Vitamin K improves.

Rose quartz stimulates the heart chakra primarily, and the throat chakra as well. The emotional, mental and astral bodies are aligned and balance is restored. It is said to heal the emotions, especially difficulty with anger or tension. It puts one in touch with oneself on the essential level, enhancing awareness of one’s true divine self.

Rose quartz helps keep one grounded and assists in communicating with one’s spirit guides in meditation. It stimulates an appreciation and a sense of beauty for the arts. Rose quartz increases personal expression and creativity, especially in matters of the heart. It is said to be a stone of the wise and compassionate.
