Humble & Kind

A few months ago I got a tip that there was a wonderful singer/songwriter named Lori McKenna that I might enjoy. I needed something musical & new so I bought her album "The Bird & the Rifle". Now she is a Nashville kind of gal, just to let you know. It is a wonderful piece of work, my wife & I both enjoy it. The other evening I listened closely to one of the songs on the album called "Humble & Kind". I think it the best folk/country song I have heard in a long, long time. It sings to me, there is hope, there is beauty in this world, but we got to work for it. It was written for her children but I think it speaks to us all.

I know I have not always been humble & kind but I am working on it.

Funny thing happened later today after I wrote this... I was wearing a t-shirt my dear friend David gave me & went to get a cup of coffee... It was a corporate thing that he picked up while working at the Moscone Center... it read "Better Information" in bold letters. A fellow that was going into a another store said, "What kind of better information have you got for me?" He was expecting some sort of corporate slogan but I said, "Be humble & kind." He said, "Whoa, you got me! God bless you."  Pass it on, humbly & kindly.

Here are the lyrics below & her singing it at the Grand Old Opry.

Know there's a light that glows by the front door
Don't forget the key is under the mat
Watch how the stars shine
Always stay humble and kind

Go to church cause your mama says to
Visit grandpa every chance that you can
It won't be wasted time
Always stay humble and kind

[Chorus]
Hold the door, say please, say thank you
Don't steal, don't cheat, and don't lie
I know you got mountains to climb
But always stay humble and kind
When the dreams that you're dreaming come true
When the work you put in is realized
Let yourself feel the pride
But always stay humble and kind

[Verse 2]
Don't expect a free ride from no-one
Don't hold or a chip, and here's why
Bitterness keeps you from flying
Always stay humble and kind
Know the difference between sleeping with someone
And sleeping with someone you love
I love you ain't no pick-up-line
So, always stay humble and kind

[Chorus]
Hold the door, say please, say thank you
Don't steal, don't cheat, and don't lie
I know you got mountains to climb
But always stay humble and kind
When these dreams that you're dreaming come true
When the work you put in is realized
Let yourself feel the pride
But always stay humble and kind

[Verse 3]
When it's hot eat a root-beer popsicle
Shut off the AC and roll the windows down
And let the summer sun shine
Always stay humble and kind
Don't take for granted the love this life gives you
Where you get where you're going turn right back around
And help the next one in line
Always stay humble and kind
